Reverend Joe Breaux passed away Tuesday evening at age 76.

Below is his full obituary: 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Reverend O. Joe Breaux, 76, who died Tuesday evening, March 5, 2019 at his residence in Lafayette.

Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.

Celebrant for the Mass and conducting services will be Most Reverend Michael Jarrell, Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Lafayette.  Homilist will be Reverend Joseph Campion, SSJ, Chaplain of St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee.   Karen Broussard, Vocalist and Tom Niel, Organist, will perform, “Before the Sun Burned Bright”, “Shepherd Me, O God”, “Pie Jesu”, “How Beautiful”, “Gift of Finest Wheat”, and “How Great Thou Art”.

Survivors include his two sisters, Lavergne Breaux Prejean and her husband, Phillip, and Mary Ann Breaux Doucet and her husband, Dale; his two brothers, Gregory Breaux and his wife, Melissa, and Charles Breaux and his wife, Melanie; his four nieces, Phyllis P. Brouliette and her husband, Tony, Mara Doucet Bellelo and her husband, Rick, Jana Breaux Dupre, and Jennifer Breaux Hidalgo, and her husband Jarred; his seven nephews, Christopher R. Prejean and his wife, Lana, Joel Prejean and his wife, Kathy, Kevin Doucet and his wife, Laura, Kern Doucet, Chandler Breaux, Cory Breaux and his wife, Allison, and Dane Breaux; five great nieces and eleven great nephews.

Father Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Overton Breaux, Sr. and Blanche Aymenthe Lavergne Breaux. 

A native of Bellevue and resident of Lafayette all his life, Father Joe Breaux was ordained to the Priesthood on June 1, 1968.  He was employed by the Diocese of Lafayette until his retirement.  He was Pastor of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Maurice, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Leroy, St. Theresa Catholic Church, Duson, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, New Iberia, St. Leo Catholic Church, Leonville and St. Edmond Catholic Church, Lafayette.  He taught and was Chaplain at St. Louis High School, Lake Charles,  Rayne Catholic High School, Rayne, Notre Dame High School, Crowley, St. Thomas More High School, Lafayette, Teurlings High School, Lafayette.  Father Joe was also Coordinator at Cursillo Center of the Diocese of Lafayette.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Christopher R. Prejean, Joel Prejean, Kevin Doucet, Kern Doucet, Chandler Breaux, Cory Breaux, and Dane Breaux.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his two brothers, Gregory Breaux and Charles, and Kyle Kennedy, Vernon Credeur, and Robert Mire. 

The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille’s southside location on Friday, March 8, 2019, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.and on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 8 AM until time of service.

A Rosary will be prayed by Reverend William Schambough, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton, at SAINT THOMAS MORE HIGH SCHOOL, 450 E. Farrel Road, Lafayette, Louisiana, 70508, Friday evening at 6:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Father O. Joe Breaux’s name to St. Thomas More High School, 450 E. Farrel Road, Lafayette, Louisiana, 70508.

A sincere Thank You and heartfelt appreciation is extended by the Breaux family to Keith and Camella Richard, Kyle and Crissy Kennedy, the entire Mire Family, to the STM Group that stayed and cared for him, the entire STM Family and the entire St. Alphonsus Family, and Lourdes Hospice, for the unlimited love, support, prayers, comfort and guidance given to Father Joe and his family during his time of need.  We are truly grateful for everything that everyone have done for our loved one.  Words cannot express our gratitude.
