A proposed state house bill could place restrictions on the size of live crawfish sold. Gonzales state representative Eddie Lambert proposed a ban on selling crawfish smaller than 3.5 inches, a size many farmers make most of their profit from.

D&T Crawfish owner Don Benoit says it would affect farmers, distributors, and consumers. Benoit sells smaller-sized crawfish for $40.00 a sack.

A medium sack is $75.00 Benoit says this bill would cause prices to skyrocket.

“The smaller crawfish go cheaper. A lot of people don’t mind eating a smaller crawfish and a three and a half inch crawfish isn’t no teeny-tiny crawfish. It’s a very usable product.””

If the bill is passed, first offenders could face up to $350.00 in fines and up to 60 days in prison.
