NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – An Iberia Parish Sheriff’s deputy will not be charged in last July’s fatal shooting of a New Iberia man. Coty Champagne, 33, was killed.

The deputy responded to a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of Evangeline Street in New Iberia. State Police said Champagne came to the door waving a gun and pointed it at the deputy. Champagne refused to lower the gun and the deputy shot him several times.

The 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said it agrees with Louisiana State Police investigators who said the deputy was justified to use lethal force.
