OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) – One man dead, and the alleged killer is behind bars today following a fatal shooting in Opelousas.
Just before midnight, police responded to a shooting in The Opelousas Housing Authority public housing complex on Lemoine Street.
Opelousas Police Department Sergeant Crystal Leblanc says “Upon Officer’s arrival is when they saw the victim on the ground needing aid for a gunshot wound.”
The victim has been identified as Mark Joubert.
The alleged suspect, 19-year-old Jaquan Frank was arrested not long after police arrived on scene.
Sgt. Leblanc says, “We canvassed the area, we’re not done several doors and one of the doors was to the suspect’s residence. He stated that himself and his girlfriend could hear a noise. She peeped outside and said there is some unknown person on the porch taking some things. At that point, he (Frank) armed himself and went outside.”
Residents say this isn’t the first time someone has been shot and killed in the neighborhood. One mother declined to reveal her identity for fear of retaliation but says she doesn’t let her young children play outside unless she’s with them.
“I keep them in the house. They can only come outside if I’ll be outside with them. Because I’ve seen too much. It’s too much death going on around here. The violence needs to stop! It needs to stop” the woman said.
The suspect, Jaquan Frank, faces charges of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm in a gun free zone.
Sergeant Leblanc says if there is someone outside of your residence attempting to take your items, it would be safer to call the police and let them handle it.
