IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) – An autopsy revealed a woman whose body was found in the Whiskey Bay Saturday died from strangulation.

The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Elizabeth Ferrell, 29, of Humble, Texas, which is just north of Houston.

Sheriff Brett Stassi said they believe her body was thrown from I-10 between the Ramah and Whiskey Bay exits on Friday. The sheriff’s office got a call around 11 a.m. Saturday about a naked woman’s body discovered by a fisherman early Saturday morning under I-10.

Officials said the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab and AFIS used her fingerprints to help assist in identifying her. Law enforcement is now trying to piece together why she was in Louisiana.

“As of this time, we know of no reason other than road trip that would have brought her to Louisiana. She had a job in Humble, TX,” Stassi said.

Stassi said the autopsy revealed she had blunt force trauma to the head from the fall but officially died from strangulation. He added she was killed somewhere else and someone used the Whiskey Bay to dispose of the body.

“It’s because of our relationship to the Whiskey Bay and Atchafalaya Basin area. We have 570 square miles of Iberville Parish. A lot of it is waterways and a lot of bayous and swamp areas,” Stassi said.

The sheriff said many people use those waterways to dump bodies, which is why Iberville Parish works many cases of bodies that are found.

In Ferrell’s case, deputies will head to Texas Tuesday morning hoping to try and get any answers on why she was in the Bayou state or leads to any suspects.

Stassi added detectives are working on leads and trying to find video that could help them crack the case open.
