A Church Point police officer rescued two people from a sinking car after heavy rainfall caused major flooding in the area.

Residents were encouraged to stay indoors as heavy downpours caused flooding in many areas like West Corporation Road. “Water has started backing up. We’ve had some of our low line areas starting to flood, which is only going to get worse,” said Police Chief Dale Thibodeaux.

According to Thibodeaux, the flood conditions are so bad, one car with two people inside was swept into a ditch by the flood current Thursday evening. “The people were slowly trying to get out. One of my officers were able to get them out of the car,” said Thibodeaux.

After only a few seconds from the officer rescuing the two occupants did the car completely sunk. “Could’ve been two lives that could’ve been lost for no reason. There’s no reason to drive through the flooded area,” Thibodeaux added.

The current is moving slower, but- even when the rain stops, Chief Thibodeaux expressed concern about draining issues. “We drain South. This means it’s starting to slow down on the drainage and we still have the North end of the parish that’s going to come in on us,” he added.

This caused him to call for extra officers to man barricades and low-line areas for the weekend. “If you drive around a barricade or in a flooded area, we will give you a citation and we will take you to jail. It’s not to be mean. iI’s for your safety and your life to be able to get you back home to your family,” he added.

Heavy downpours are expected for the next few days that means, more possible floodings. Residents are encouraged to take proper precautions.
