City of Youngsville approves budget; pay raises for city leaders

The Youngsville City Council recognizes the growth of their city and voted to increase the city’s budget by more than $800,000.

Council members said yes to a more than $19,000,000 operating budget, including an additional $300,000 for the Youngsville Police Department and a raise for the police chief.

“We added on three additional school resource officers. This municipality decided they would partner with the Lafayette Parish School Board. The school board will pay half the salary, the city will pay the other half” Chief Ricky Boudreaux said.

As the city continues to invest in water, sewage, roads, and infrastructure, the council’s vote to increase elected official salaries were based on comparable salaries in cities like Carencro, Broussard, and Scott.

Youngsville Mayor, Ken Ritter said, “At the end of a four-year term the council looks at the compensation of elected officials and this year was no exception. After reviewing the comparable cities salaries for mayor it was decided to place an increase elected officials.”

The compensation task force compared the Youngsville mayor’s $68,000 salary to Broussard’s $72,000, Carencro’s $75,000, and Scott’s $80,000, setting the incoming mayor’s salary at $78,000.

Same for the police chief:

$76,000 in Broussard, $72,000 in Carencro, and $78,000 in Scott, bringing the new police chief salary to $75,000.

The new salaries go into effect when the next wave of elected officials are sworn into office. The current city leader salaries were voted on and set by the previous administration.
