Experts are warning job seekers about an e-mail scam offering employment with a local oilfield company.
It’s a scam involving a company in Lafayette, Maurice and Youngsville.
Consumers are being contacted by a person claiming to be with a technology company allegedly working with Schlumberger Oil & Gas offering a job as an administrative assistant.
Sharane Gott, President/CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, says, “They put their resume on a website or two or three where they’re looking for position and then all of a sudden, they get an email from a company and they’re offering a position possibly a position. All they have to do is to fill out the information, and then of course they’re asking for money.”
Schlumberger is aware of this scam.
On the company’s website, there is a pop-up message warning consumers of recruitment fraud: Fraudsters pretending to represent Schlumberger are sending e-mails, letters and texts offering employment to prospective employees. These offers often look legitimate and include job description, salary, and benefit details.
“They take a trusted name like Schlumberger and then they use it to their advantage so with this particular employment scam and that’s what it is these people are looking for employment,” explains Gott.
News 10 reports, “When consumers get this email, obviously we’ve talked about in the past before that it does look legitimate, but what are some ways to tell that it’s not?”
“Well, there’s lot of ways to tell,” adds Gott. “If you pay attention, sometimes there’s misspelled words with any of these things because often the people that are sending it to you are from another country.”
On its website, Schlumberger states its emails always end in “@slb.com.” Any email styled with the Schlumberger logo but using a different e-mail format is not genuine.
“When they tell you that all they have to do is check you out and make sure you have to pay these fees and that fee and guess what. We’ll even reimburse you. It sounds good. In fact, it sounds too good to be true,” says Gott.
