ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY)— A traffic stop led to the arrest of a man with a warrant for attempted second-degree murder, authorities said.

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office said deputies stopped the driver of a red PT Cruiser on I-49 for no license plate and speeding 89 in a 70 MPH zone.

A news release stated the driver was identified as Joseph Paul Edwards of Baton Rouge and was only in possession of a State of Louisiana identification card.

Authorities said, deputies asked Edwards for his vehicles paperwork but were told the vehicle belong to his girlfriend.

As deputies ran an identity check on Edwards, it revealed that he had an active warrant for his arrest for attempted second-degree murder in Baton Rouge, according to a news release.

A spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said, the passenger who was the girlfriend and owner of the vehicle was identified as Toccara W. Ouedraogo of Port Allen but was in possession of a Texas ID card.

Deputies said the woman stated she had a bill of sale but did not have insurance on the car not was the vehicle registered in her name.

Edwards was arrested the traffic charges and an outstanding warrant from Baton Rouge Police.

A news release stated that because the arrest of Edwards and Ouedraogo for having no driver’s license, the vehicle was inventoried prior to being towed. As the vehicle was being inventoried, two small clear plastic bags were recovered on the passenger side floor board.

Authorities said, one of the small bags contained 13 small aluminum foil packets which tested positive for properties of heroin. The other bag was contained a white in color substance and was sent to the crime lab for analysis.

Edwards, 36, was arrested and police charged him with, speeding 89-70, expired driver’s license, no insurance, failure to register vehicle, possession with intent to distribute schedule I (Heroin). His was set at $27,500 with a hold for Baton Rouge PD.

Ouedraogo, 34, was arrested and charged by police for possession with intent to distribute schedule I (Heroin). Her bond was set at $25,000.
