MONTGOMERY, Ala (WIAT) — One Alabama senator wants to give you the chance to vote on a lottery. In addition, State Senator Del Marsh plans to introduce his own lottery bill soon.

Tuesday, Republican State Senator Jim McClendon introduced two bills in the legislature, one deals with a lottery and the other one will make it a constitutional amendment.  

“My constituents want to be able to buy a lottery ticket, they want easier access to participate in a lottery,” Senator Jim McClendon said.

McClendon says his bill is a clean lottery bill, the bill doesn’t support other forms of gambling. 

“No casinos, no card games, no roulette, no dice, no live dealers,” McClendon said.

 McClendon estimates the lottery will generate $250 million annually for the state. He wants the money divided up for education and general state needs.

“I think it is a great idea we find people running out in all directions almost every week, probably daily to go to other states to put our money from Alabama in those states,” Ann Gunderson said.

As popular as the idea of a lottery is, there are still some people who are against it.

“I don’t think that Alabama needs a lottery, if anyone wants to gamble they can just go to Atlanta it right down the street,” Mariah Hopkins said.

If passed, a measure to amend will be on the 2020 presidential primary ballot next March.
