New details in arrest of Rebecca Landry after infant discovered in box at Storage Unit

Just before 8:30 Thursday morning, Lafayette Police responded to the 2100 block of Verot School Road where a newborn’s body was found in a box at a Lafayette storage unit.

57-year-old, Rebecca Landry, is a suspect in the case and is being charged with second degree murder.

News Ten acquired an affidavit from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s office with more details on Landry’s arrest.

The affidavit stated Lafayette Police were called to Bridge Storage on June 4th after a man found a newborn’s body inside a box.  The box was found inside a storage unit he purchased at an auction.

One Bridge Storage Employee said units and all of their contents are put up for auction when a tenant has gone 52 days without paying the bill.

The new renter identified Landry as the person who’s property was found inside of the unit.

During an interview with detectives, Landry confessed to giving birth to the baby inside her apartment in 2001.

After not seeking medical treatment, she said the baby survived several days before it suddenly stopped breathing.

Landry said she did not seek help for the baby. Instead, she placed the body into a box and kept it in her apartment for a period of time.

In 2002, she moved the box to her mother’s storage unit where it remained until it was found earlier this week.

Landry has other children.  She said no one else knew about the birth of the child in 2001.

A DNA test to confirm Landry’s relationship to the deceased infant is still pending.

Lafayette Police Department Spokesperson, Corporal Paul Mouton, said they are currently awaiting autopsy results. This is still under investigation.KLFY Jazmin Thibodeaux
