NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)- It’s been nearly 14 years since New Iberia has had its own police department, but the city’s new force is beginning to take shape.
“This is all a work in progress,” Chief Todd Todd D’Albor said Friday as he stood inside first floor of city hall, the former NIPD station’s location.
He has a long to-do list to build a department and with little to start with but the facility itself.
Plans have already been made on where to establish the patrol division, which the chief said will include about 10 officers per shift. The entire force will comprise of 71 employees.
“With the assistance of the New Orleans Police Department, we were able to obtain 80 portable radios that will assist us to get started,” D’Albor said.
The new station’s holding cell area is currently being used by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office for inmates awaiting court hearings, but the space will be turned over to the new department.
A’Dalbor said he expects the department to be fully staffed and operational by July 1.
