The Opelousas Police Department is cracking down on drug dealing in the city.
36-year-old Jacoby Collins was arrested on Friday by Opelousas Police on multiple drug charges. Officers found marijuana in Collins’ home, as well as a little over $8,300 in cash from suspected drug sales.
Police Chief Martin McLendon says, now that they’ve got one suspected dealer of the street, they’re not stopping there, “We are coming one neighborhood at a time, one street corner at a time.”
He tells News 10 they’re doing this because it’s far more than just concern over drug use, “They’re burglarizing vehicles and they’re using whatever items they obtain, or even cash that is left in vehicles. They’re using that to try and support their drug habit. So there’s a direct correlation between those thefts that are occurring and the street-level drug dealers who are supporting the habit of those persons.”
McLendon says he’s got only one message for drug dealers in the city, “If you set up shop in Opelousas, you better pack your bags and find a new location.”
