UPDATE, 2/14/22, 11:01 a.m.: The man involved in the shooting died on Friday, Feb. 11 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. He has been identified as Richard Malone, 41 of Lake Charles. It is still an active investigation and further information will be posted as it becomes available.
ORIGINAL, 2/9/22, 5:09 p.m.: LAKE CHARLES, La. (KLFY) — One person was injured in a shooting at around 4:30 a.m. this morning involving a Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) officer, according to the Louisiana State Police (LSP).
The subject was identified as a 41-year-old man, according to LSP Trooper Derek Senegal. The incident occurred near the intersection of Common St. and 7th St. (EDITOR’S NOTE: KLFY is not publishing the victim’s name at this time, as they have not yet been charged with any crime(s). This story will be updated should that situation change.)
“During the encounter, an altercation took place between [the subject] and LCPD officers,” said Senegal. “[The subject] used the vehicle he was driving and struck at least one marked LCPD vehicle. At some time during the altercation, an LCPD officer fired his weapon, striking [the subject] in the upper left arm.”
Senegal said LCPD officers pursued the subject down Common St. before the subject lost control of his vehicle and crashed. No other injuries were reported. The subject was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Forensics Investigative Unit is processing the scene for evidence. This is an active investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available, Senegal said.
