Some residents and business owners along Verot School Road in Lafayette Parish say they have had issues with flooding during constant rains like the ones seen Wednesday.
With the community growing rapidly, they would like to see the roads receive some much needed attention.
“Ditches back up, mostly from here this way,” said Kevin Robbins, owner of Kevin’s Barber Shop in Youngsville. “After being at this location just over five years, business still suffers after a heavy rain.”
“Last May, Verot flooded and I had a number of people cancel their appointments,” said Robbins. “A number of others parked four to five businesses down to actually walk over here.”
District 9 councilman William Theriot says the flooding in this area is a negative side effect of the city’s growth.
“Naturally, the more rooftops you have,” said Theriot. “Fields of that used to be cane fields, open field so that would absorb water. The more cement that you put on these areas… the water has to go somewhere. Drainage is absolutely something that everybody needs to look at.”
That is why Councilman Theriot has petitioned for something to be done.
“DOTD has come out and dug some ditches,” said Theriot. “Cleaned out the ditches along Verot School Road all the way down right before highway 92. I think they are supposed to be looking at that also.””
