The National Hurricane Center is back to monitoring several areas in the tropics but fortunately, there are no immediate threats to Acadiana or Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Mindy developed yesterday afternoon in the northeastern Gulf before making landfall across the panhandle of Florida last night. Mindy is now a depression as it continues to quickly move east, well away from Acadiana.

The NHC is now monitoring an area of storminess in the Caribbean Sea. This area has a low chance for development as it moves into the Bay of Campeche this weekend. We will have to watch the western Gulf closely early next week. We don’t expect a tropical storm or a hurricane to form, but we could see tropical moisture surge northward and bring heavy rain to the coast of Texas and Louisiana. This deep tropical moisture feed may last through much of next week so heavy rain will be a threat. As of now, that threat looks higher across Texas.

Hurricane Larry became a major hurricane over the weekend. The NHC shows Larry as a Category 2 as it stays in the central Atlantic. Larry will not threaten the U.S. but could come close to Bermuda as weakening continues. Also, there is a strong tropical wave off the coast of Africa that has a medium chance of development. The next name on the list is Nicholas.
